As a
result of its introduction and transition from an officer only event, it
has been a bit of a struggle at times getting sufficient numbers to play
and it is only because of the support of sponsors like Sidey, that the
event is now beginning to grow, according to Major Alexander Stewart.
He
commented: “The individuals who take part in this competition are past
and present members of the Black Watch, or the new 3rd Battalion of The
Royal Regiment of Scotland. This includes those from other corps or
regiments who are currently attached to the battalion.
“The
trophies which can be won at the competition have been competed for in
one form or another for 100 years. Winners are also awarded prizes which
they may keep and this is where Sidey come in.”
He
continued: “There is absolutely no doubt that the continued support of
Sidey Ltd is a tremendous help to the competition and will encourage
others to join us in future years as we continue to grow. The very
generous sponsorship we receive enables us to present prizes to the
winners without the need to increase the entry fee. Bearing in mind this
competition is open to all ranks, we want to keep the entry fee as low
as we can to encourage the youngest and most junior soldiers to join us
without breaking the bank. Sidey plays a huge part in allowing that to
happen. There is no doubt in my mind that without the sponsorship, the
competition would at best shrink back to what it was - a competition for
a select few, rather than what it should be - an occasion for everyone
to enjoy”.
