Melville tenants benefit from multi-million pound window replacement
 

 Homes receive energy efficiency boost as cold weather bites

As the cold weather continues to bite and heating costs remain extremely high, almost a quarter of tenants of Melville Housing Association have been given cause for cheer with the completion of the first phase of a massive window replacement programme that will ultimately see 900 Melville homes receive new, energy-efficient, double-glazed windows to help fight off the winter chill.
 

The first phase of the programme saw the installation of new windows on the Mayfield estate in Dalkeith. The work was carried out by Perth-based windows specialists Sidey, who have been completing installations at a rate of better than one home a day since they were appointed in January 2008.

Marking the halfway point of the project were Mr and Mrs Pirrie who have lived in their home in Laurel Bank Road, Mayfield for over 48 years, “These new windows are wonderful and a huge improvement on the draughty ones we had before,” said Mr Pirrie. “I couldn’t fault the job done by the lads who fitted them. They gave us plenty of notice, turned up when they said they would, completed the work in a few hours and then tidied up after themselves. The whole job, from start to finish, has been excellent.”
 

Ian Slamin, Melville’s Property Services Director, explained, “We are delighted with how the replacement programme has gone so far and the feedback we’ve received from tenants has been overwhelmingly positive. The new windows are a vast improvement in every way but particularly in terms of energy efficiency and we would hope that they are already helping to reduce tenants’ fuel bills and keep their homes warmer during the cold spells we’ve been experiencing recently. They also have the added benefit of requiring little in the way of maintenance, reducing our servicing costs in the long term.”
 

The window replacement programme comes as part of Melville Housing Association’s drive to reach the Scottish Housing Quality Standard, set down by the Scottish Government, which all social landlords in Scotland must meet by 2015.
 

David Brownlie, Sideys Commercial Sales Manager, commented, “It is a real milestone for the whole team to have successfully reached the halfway stage of this two year partnership. We have received excellent feedback from the tenants and are delighted just how smoothly the contract has run so far.
 

“I am also pleased that our energy efficient windows have made valuable improvements to the homes and communities of Melville’s tenants and we are looking forward to making a difference to many more over the next year.”
